The Institute for Functional Dentistry (IFD) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit advancing oral-systemic health education for dentists, dental teams, and the broader community of practitioners working at the intersection of oral health and whole-body medicine. We bridge dentistry and medicine through systems biology, timeline medicine, and functional medicine principles, equipping clinicians to detect and address root causes of disease through the lens of oral health.

Our Mission & Vision

Our mission is to revolutionize dentistry by fostering a community of practitioners who embrace a functional, systems-based model, where oral health is transformed through purpose, precision, and whole body healing.

We envision a future where the mouth serves as the diagnostic lens into the whole body and dentistry is redefined as essential medicine, for a world of better health.

Why IFD Leads This Movement

The Institute for Functional Dentistry is the first organization of its kind, delivering pioneering residency-level educational programs that unite dentistry with whole-body medicine. Our approach and curriculum is grounded in systems biology and oral–systemic science, equipping practitioners to treat the root causes of disease.

How We Bridge Dentistry & Medicine

The mouth is the earliest, most accessible window into systemic health. Oral findings often appear years before systemic diagnoses, giving clinicians a critical advantage for early detection. Functional dentistry works through the oral-systemic connection to assess conditions tied to immunity, hormones, metabolism, airway, sleep, the gut, mitochondrial function, toxins, and the microbiome. For any practitioner working in oral health or whole-body medicine, this connection is the foundation of upstream care.

Dentistry has been missing the medical context. IFD exists to close that gap, for dental professionals and for every practitioner whose patients deserve more than a siloed answer.

Our Story

The Institute for Functional Dentistry (IFD) emerged from a shared realization across multiple dental and medical disciplines: the mouth is not separate from the body, yet the education system has kept them siloed for decades.

Our founders are clinicians and educators from pediatric dentistry, endodontics, and general dentistry. Across different specialties and patient populations, they kept seeing the same pattern: systemic disease with a clear oral signature, and a profession that had no framework to act on what it was seeing.

They saw the same pattern across patients and practices:

Chronic disease leaves an oral signature
Dentistry lacks the medical framework to interpret what it sees
Systemic dysfunction appears in the mouth before it appears in lab results
Medicine lacks the oral-systemic lens to ask the right questions

Patterns We Could No Longer Ignore

IFD was created to build the bridge that should have existed all along: A unified, rigorous, evidence-based pathway that expands dentistry into a systems-based, root-cause, preventative medical model.

For our founders, the turning points were unmistakable. Cases where the mouth revealed life-altering diagnoses long before the medical system caught them. Children with rampant ulcerations, enamel defects, behavioral changes, metabolic collapse, autoimmune triggers, undetected diabetes, and mold toxicity all demonstrated the same truth: the mouth speaks early, clearly, and urgently.

These clinical moments revealed how often the mouth is the first place systemic disease appears, and how underprepared most practitioners are to recognize, interpret, and act on those signals.

Our Purpose Going Forward

As a nonprofit, IFD exists to bridge the divide between dentistry and medicine—restoring the mouth to its rightful place as a central biomarker for systemic health and human longevity.

We are building a community of practitioners trained to detect and interpret early signs of chronic disease through the lens of oral health. By equipping dentists, dental teams, and aligned health professionals with a functional, systems-based approach, IFD is expanding what oral health practice can do and establishing it as an essential component of whole-body medicine.

This is only the beginning. As IFD grows, so too will our impact—expanding education, advancing research, and shaping a future where functional dentistry is essential to lifelong health.

Our Core Values

We believe global health transforms when science is shared and connected. IFD is committed to equity, access to care, and long-term educational impact. We train clinicians to think upstream, before disease begins.

Root-Cause Thinking

We train dental and allied health practitioners to look at root causes as a way to prevent and reverse disease, not just treat symptoms.

Oral-Systemic Integration

We honor the inseparable connection between the mouth and the body.

Science-Driven Education

Our education is rooted in what is proven, promising, and biologically coherent.

Empowered Providers

We train dental and allied health practitioners to lead as true health collaborators.

Whole-Person Healing

Our care is centered around personalized, patient-specific wellness.

Collaboration Over Silos

We believe the oral-systemic connection is best understood when dental professionals, medical providers, and aligned health practitioners work from the same framework.
