Detailed Curriculum Breakdown

At the Institute for Functional Dentistry (IFD), we believe hygienists are the frontline diagnosticians of modern health. This program is designed to transform how you see the body, the mouth, and your role as a hygienist in preventing chronic disease.

Track 2 is designed specifically for dental hygienists and periodontal-focused clinicians who want to expand beyond traditional periodontal care and lead the oral-systemic movement with confidence, clinical precision, and purpose.

This program builds a comprehensive foundation in functional medicine as it applies to hygiene, integrating systems biology, root-cause thinking, and whole-body oral health strategies that reshape prevention, periodontal management, and patient engagement.

Credential Outcome

Upon completion, you will receive a Certificate in Functional Hygiene.

Additionally, your name will appear in the IFD Certified Practitioner directory, positioning you as a leader in integrative, oral-systemic care.

Continuing Education (CE) Hours

The program includes over 85.75 CE hours.

Our framework integrates didactic learning, case-based application, clinical integration, and collaborative contemplation.

This program is for hygienists and periodontal-focused clinicians who want to practice at the leading edge of oral-systemic medicine. It is ideal for:

  • Dental Hygienists
  • Periodontal-Focused Clinicians
  • Oral Hygiene Enthusiasts
  • Preventive Health Coaches Working in Dental Settings

Hygienists today face unprecedented pressure to manage disease without understanding its systemic origins. Functional dentistry restores purpose, expands scope, and reconnects clinicians to the “why” behind whole-body prevention.

Our residency-style curriculum ensures you develop a full-spectrum skill set, integrating functional medicine and functional dentistry at a depth not found in any hygiene program.

You will learn a systems-based framework rooted in the principles of functional medicine adapted specifically for the dental hygiene profession.

  • Integrated Functional Medicine Training: The first half of the program pairs a foundational course on applying functional medicine in clinical practice with hygiene-focused dental case studies and integration sessions. This includes  35 CE hours of Functional Medicine training and 8 hours of IFD integration.
  • Advanced Practice Module (APM): You will complete an advanced module that supports periodontal and oral-systemic competency.
    • Gastrointestinal Health: This APM includes 14.75 CE hours of Functional Medicine training and 3 hours of IFD Integration.
  • Specialized IFD Modules: The second half of the program transitions into hygiene-specific content, including advanced oral microbiome mapping, root-cause periodontal protocols, and functional patient coaching.

The Functional Hygiene Certificate program provides targeted, high-impact training that integrates seamlessly with functional medicine frameworks. You will learn to identify root-cause drivers of oral inflammation, understand whole-body contributors to periodontal disease, and apply upstream prevention in daily clinical care.
