The IFD Difference
Detailed Curriculum Breakdown

At the Institute for Functional Dentistry (IFD), we train you to become a true health collaborator, enabling you to play a vital role in addressing the root causes of disease and improving patient outcomes. Track 3 builds on the IFD core curriculum and includes the required Institute for Functional Medicine Advanced Practice Modules (APMs) in Environmental Health and Gastrointestinal Health.

This program provides in-depth clinical knowledge and practical frameworks to support advanced integration of functional dentistry into practice. Track 3 is designed for dentists seeking deep competency and embodied application of functional dentistry principles, with flexibility to fully integrate the material while engaging with core functional medicine concepts.

Credential Outcome

Upon completion, you will receive a Certificate in Functional Dentistry.

Additionally, your name will also appear in the IFD Certified Practitioner directory, marking you as an early leader in the oral-systemic movement.

Continuing Education (CE) Hours

The program includes over 160+ CE hours.

Our framework integrates didactic learning, case-based application, clinical integration, and collaborative contemplation.

This program is for dentists who are ready to elevate their practice and apply functional principles. It's designed for those who want to bridge the gap between traditional and functional dentistry without committing to the full board pathway.

  • General Dentists
  • Dental Specialists
  • Integrative Practitioners

Dentists face unprecedented burnout when their training teaches procedures without grounding them in purpose. Functional dentistry reconnects clinicians to meaning, clarity, and the true impact of their work.

Our residency-style curriculum ensures you develop a full-spectrum skill set, integrating functional medicine and dentistry. You will learn a systems-based approach rooted in the principles of functional medicine.

  • Integrated Functional Medicine Training: The first half of the program pairs a foundational course on applying functional medicine in clinical practice with dental case studies and integration sessions. This includes 35 CE hours of Functional Medicine training and 8 hours of IFD integration.
  • Advanced Practice Module (APM): You will complete two APMs, which are required to cover targeted systems. Each of the required APMs for this track includes 14.75 CE hours of Functional Medicine training and 3 IFD integration sessions.
    • Environmental Health
    • Gastrointestinal
  • Specialized IFD Modules: The second half of the program delivers the full IFD curriculum, a comprehensive and deeply integrated educational experience spanning the biological, clinical, behavioral, and systems-based dimensions of functional dentistry. Through more than 50 specialty-specific, pre-recorded lectures and 16 IFD integration sessions, participants explore oral-systemic health across nutrition, the microbiome, airway and pediatric development, periodontics, diagnostics, detoxification, regenerative and restorative sciences, bioenergetics, and practice leadership. The curriculum also addresses communication, ethics, resilience, and implementation within modern dental practice. This immersive, case-based structure ensures clinicians move beyond theory into confident, systems-level application of functional dentistry.

The Core Functional Dentistry Certificate program is designed for dentists seeking deep integration and clinical mastery within functional dentistry. This curriculum develops the ability to recognize early oral–systemic patterns, apply systems-based clinical reasoning, and translate functional insights into proactive, preventive dental care. Program completion prepares dentists to serve as first detectors of dysfunction within the healthcare team.
