Detailed Curriculum Breakdown

At the Institute for Functional Dentistry (IFD), we train you to become a true health collaborator, enabling you to play a vital role in addressing the root causes of disease and improving patient outcomes. Track 1 includes Foundations in Functional Dentistry, paired with the core course offered by the Institute for Functional Medicine, Applied Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP).

This track is intended for all members of the clinical care team.

This program provides the foundational knowledge and practical tools to elevate your role and integrate fully with a functional dental practice. This is entry-level training for clinical support professionals who want to align with purpose-driven care.

Credential Outcome

Upon completion, you will receive a Certificate in Functional Dental Team Care.

Continuing Education (CE) Hours

The program includes over 52.5 CE hours.

Our framework integrates didactic learning, case-based application, clinical integration, and collaborative contemplation.

This program is for dental professionals who serve on the front lines of patient care and are passionate about a whole-body approach to health. The Functional Dental Team Certificate program is the perfect entry-level training for:

  • Dental Hygienists
  • Dental Assistants
  • Treatment Coordinators
  • Non-Licensed Team Members
  • Auxiliary Providers (OMFT, SLP, MD, PhD, DC, DO, ND, NMD, NP, IFMCP, etc.)

Dental teams face unprecedented burnout when their training teaches procedures without grounding them in purpose. Functional dentistry reconnects clinicians to meaning, clarity, and the true impact of their work.

Our residency-style curriculum ensures you develop a full-spectrum skill set, integrating functional medicine and dentistry. You will learn a systems-based approach rooted in the principles of functional medicine.

  • Integrated Functional Medicine Training: The first half of the program pairs a foundational course on applying functional medicine in clinical practice with dental case studies and IFD integration sessions. Our students co-enroll in AFMCP as their starting point. This includes 35 CE hours of Functional Medicine training and 8 hours of IFD integration.
  • Specialized IFD Modules: The second half of the program transitions into IFD-specific coursework, exploring the therapeutic encounter and the systemic interconnections of oral health, including nutrition, the oral microbiome, and hygiene.

The Functional Dental Team Certificate program provides targeted, high-impact training that integrates seamlessly with your functional medicine foundation. Our curriculum teaches dental teams to interpret root-cause patterns, understand whole-body drivers of disease, and support clinicians in upstream prevention.
